The Best and Worst of 2016

I like to call 2016 the year of the comeback.  The year opened in the stock market with one of the worst starts to any year on record.  But then one day in mid-February, it all turned around, and climbed right through mid-summer.  Suddenly the Brexit vote went the opposite way that everyone though, and the market plunged overnight.  A few days later, this corrected, and the market came back a second time.  Then the election happened, and after a month or so of softness, the market turned around and shot straight up to end the year. Comebacks were all over the place in 2016, as you will see below. Today I’m going to take a look at what worked in 2016, and what didn’t.

  • Worst: Valeant Pharmacuticals, VRX -85.26%, Endo International PLC , ENDP -73.10, First Solar, FSLR -51.90%

o   Last Year

  • Best: Netflix +139.2% (+12.59% TY), Amazon +122% (+17.72%)
  • Worst: Chesepeake Energy -77.5% (+41.82% TY), CONSOL Energy -77% (+112.72% TY)


o   This Year

  • Best: Direxion Daily Brazil Bull 3x ETF, BRZU +195.71%, Proshares Ultra Junior Miners, GDJJ +109.84%
  • Worst: Direxion Daily Jr Gld Mnrs Bear 3x ETF, JDST -97.41, Direxion Dly S&P Oil&Gs Ex&Prd Br 3x ETF, DRIP -87.42%

  • Best: Energy +19.45%
  • Worst: Financial Services +0.45%*
  • *Financial Services and Real Estate were broken out as their own sectors from Financials in 2016. Healthcare was worst performing year over year at +1.21%

o   Last Year

  • Best: Consumer Discretionary, +9.94%
  • Worst: Energy: -21.46%

  • Best: Russia +52%
  • Worst: China -12 to -15%

o   Last Year

  • Best: Jamaica + more than 80%
  • Worst: Ukraine – more than 38%



o   This Year

  • Best: Oil +52.5%
  • Worst: Cocoa -33.1%

o   Last Year

  • Best: Cocoa +10%
  • Worst: Oil -30%

As you can see, energy was the biggest comeback of 2016.  Small caps and biotech are the two sectors I am watching to make a comeback in 2017.  What do yo think will be the comeback story of next year?
